CALL TO ORDER &
INTRODUCTIONS
|
The Mill Valley School District Board of
Trustees, acting as the Governing Board of the Mill Valley School
District, met in a special joint meeting with the City of Mill Valley
City Council at 6:45 PM on Monday, October 20, 2003 at Mill
Valley City Hall Council Chambers, 26 Corte Madera Avenue, Mill Valley, CA.
Mayor Christopher Raker called the meeting to order at 6:45 PM.
City staff in attendance were introduced. |
| 1. FINANCIAL UPDATE |
City Manager Don Hunter gave a financial
update from the City's perspective, followed by a District financial
update by Superintendent Young. |
| 2. MS MARSH |
Ms. Young reviewed the recent marsh
project adjacent to Middle School and the District's renaming of the
marsh to honor Elizabeth Terwilliger, environmental educator.
Interpretive signs and one designating the name of the marsh will be
installed. |
| 3. HOUSING ELEMENT |
City Planning Director Rory Walsh gave an
update on the City's Housing Elements, saying that the City's proposal
was certified by the State in August. The plan includes 225
additional housing units to be established by 2007; second units can be
used to meet the targets. Ms. Young reviewed the work of the
Partnership Project including the changing needs of staff. In
response to a question about the Alto School information in the Housing
Element Report, Ms. Young said that the State had been informed that no
decisions have been made about the site, no RFP is outstanding and it is now in
"suspense". |
| 4. SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL |
City Public Works Director Wayne Bush reviewed
traffic and corridor improvements, which were part of a $350,000 grant
from the Safe Routes to School program. They include radar signs
near Edna Maguire and Middle Schools, a new pathway along Camino Alto,
and bike path and intersection improvements. |
| 5. EMERGENCY PREP |
Fire Marshal Jeff Davidson reported on
emergency preparedness concerning the District, including consolidation
of training efforts for staff. He said that a certificated first
aid program will be offered to staff next year. |
| 6. NEW BUSINESS |
Mr. Khademi recognized Trisha Garlock,
Kiddo Executive Director, who received a Milley Award recently.
Ms. Young reported that there is interest in using the median strip near
the Middle School parking lot for a new community garden. The
consensus of the Board and Council is to meet more often or to have
longer meetings together. The District will arrange for a joint
meeting before the end of the current school year. |
| 7. ADJOURNMENT |
Mr. Raker adjourned the
joint meeting at 7:35 PM in order for the City Council to conduct the
remainder of their regular meeting. |
|
Respectfully submitted,
Barbara B. Young, Superintendent & Secretary to Board of Trustees
