First Grade Library Media Content Standards

  • Information Literacy
    • The student who is information literate:
      • accesses information efficiently and effectively
      • evaluates information critically and competently
      • uses information accurately and creatively
  • Independent Learning
    • The student who is an independent learner is information literate and:
      • pursues information related to personal interests
      • appreciates literature and other creative expressions of information
      • strives for excellence in information seeking and knowledge generation
  • Social Responsibility
    • The student who contributes positively to the learning community and to society is information literate and:
      • recognizes the importance of information to a democratic society
      • practices ethical behavior in regard to information and information technology
      • participates effectively in groups to pursue and generate information

The school library media program is not only integral to and supportive of the school curriculum, but also provides a mechanism for choice and exploration beyond the prescribed course of study. The school library media program provides a wide range of resources and information that satisfy the educational needs and interests of students. The school library media center provides a setting where students develop skills they will need as adults to locate, analyze, evaluate, interpret, and communicate information and ideas in an information-rich world.

In addition to skills learned in kindergarten, first grade students will:

  • Begin to apply knowledge of alphabetical order to locate books in the easy section (alphabetize to the first letter)
  • Begin to understand that non-fiction books are arranged by subject
  • Begin to understand that resources provide information
  • Use pictures as a source of information
  • Locate the reference section of the LMC
  • Begin to record facts
  • Select books that can be read independently
  • Continue to learn about parts of a book (spine, call number)
  • Increase depth of understanding of fiction and non-fiction differentiating between fact and fiction
  • Be introduced to the significance of the Caldecott Award and identify Caldecott Award books
  • Compare different versions of a story
  • Continue to identify different types of literature
  • Become acquainted with additional authors and illustrators
  • Compare and contrast the work of familiar book illustrators
  • Explore science and math through poetry and picture books
  • Practice careful use of books and materials
  • Take responsibility for timely return of materials
