First Grade Literacy Content Standards

First grade students are expected to:

  • Reading
    • Understand concepts about print
      • demonstrate one to one correspondence of word to text
      • know parts of a book (identify title, author, contents page, etc.)
      • identify letters, words, and sentences
    • Phonemic awareness
      • distinguish long and short vowel sounds in orally stated single-syllable words (e.g. mad/made)
      • create and state a series of rhyming words (including consonant blends)
      • add, delete, or change sounds in order to change words (e.g. cow to how, cat to rat)
      • blend sounds to read words (e.g. /c/a/t/ = cat)
      • hear and segment initial, medial, and final sounds in single syllable words
    • Decoding and word recognition
      • read familiar texts aloud with ease and accuracy (fluency)
      • know all letter names, shapes, and sounds including consonant blends, long and short vowel patterns and blend those sounds into recognizable words
      • recognize high frequency words (e.g. the, said, and, etc.)
      • use knowledge of vowel digraphs and r-controlled letter sounds to read
      • sound out words, break words into smaller parts (e.g. -s, -ed, -ing, look, looked, etc.)
      • read compound words and contractions
      • predict unknown text, monitor own reading, and self-correct using meaning, structure, and visual cues while reading
      • read common word “families”
    • Comprehension 
      • recall details (responding to who, what, when, where, and how questions)
      • relate prior knowledge to textual information
      • retell the central ideas of a simple story
      • follow one-step written instructions
      • use story context and pictures to predict and confirm
      • use story structure to interpret text (beginning, middle, ending, characters, setting, problem, solution)
    • Vocabulary/concept development
      • classify grade appropriate categories of words (e.g. concrete collections: food, animals, etc.)
  • Writing
    • Write first and last name using upper and lower case letters
    • Write for a variety of purposes
      • write lists, signs, notes, stories, poems, journals, letters, etc.
      • convey a message using multiple sentences in a simple narrative or factual report, such as writing about personal experience
    • Demonstrate knowledge of:
      • simple sentence construction
      • capitalization of proper nouns, the pronoun "I", and the first word in a sentence, correctly using singular and plural nouns
      • periods, question marks, and exclamation marks in story writing
      • contractions and singular possessive pronouns (e.g. my/mine, his/hers, etc.)
    • Write with phonetic (temporary) spelling for unknown words using beginning, middle, end letter sounds, and basic spelling patterns; -at, -ing, -ike
    • Use a core of correctly spelled high frequency words
    • Write legibly using correct spacing between words and appropriate letter formation
    • Use descriptive words when writing
    • Begin to reread writing for clarity, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling
  • Listening and speaking
    • Listen to a variety of literature for enjoyment and information
    • Listen attentively, respectfully, and critically to others
    • Listen and follow simple two-step directions
    • Tell or retell stories in sequence, and relate to personal experience
    • Communicate ideas effectively, for example:
      • using suitable voice level
      • sustaining topic
      • providing appropriate responses
      • asking appropriate questions
      • using descriptive words
      • incorporating sensory detail
    • Participate in whole class and small group activities, for example:
      • discussion
      • role playing
      • recite poems, rhymes, songs and stories
      • readers’ theater
      • sharing
