First Grade Science Content Standards

First grade students are expected to:

  • Physical Science
    • Basic concepts about the properties of matter and explore characteristics of light and color
      • Classify materials as solids, liquids, or gases by their different properties
      • Recognize that properties of materials can change when they are mixed, heated, or cooled
      • Understand that the sun provides light for the Earth
      • Understand that objects that block light cast shadows and that light can be reflected
      • Recognize that any color can be made from the three primary colors, magenta, cyan, and yellow
      • Understand that light passes more readily through some materials than others
  • Earth Science
    • To observe, predict, and describe weather

Know the sun warms the land, air and water

      • Know that weather changes from day to day, but that temperature, rain, and snow tend to be predictable during a season
      • Know how to use simple tools (e.g. thermometer, wind vane) to measure weather conditions and record changes from day to day and across the seasons
  • Life Science
    • Understand the concept of ecosystems and learn about different ecosystems and habitats
      • Understand that different plants and animals inhabit different environments and have external features that help them survive in these different environments
      • Know that animals eat plants or other animals for food and may also use plants or animals for shelter and nesting
      • Understand the role of major structures of common plants (roots, stems, leaves)
      • Be able to determine the classification of animals based on their physical characteristics (i.e. animals with sharp teeth eat meat, animals with flat teeth eat plants)
      • Explore the interdependence of living things
  • Investigating and experimentation
    • Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations
      • Record observations and data with pictures, graphs, numbers, and/or written statements
      • Make new observations when discrepancies exist between two descriptions of the same object or phenomena
      • Learn science content from field observations, teacher demonstrations, group experiments, individual projects, and from reading
