Second Grade Library Media Content Standards

  • Information Literacy
    • The student who is information literate:
      • accesses information efficiently and effectively
      • evaluates information critically and competently
      • uses information accurately and creatively
  • Independent Learning
    • The student who is an independent learner is information literate and:
      • pursues information related to personal interests
      • appreciates literature and other creative expressions of information
      • strives for excellence in information seeking and knowledge generation
  • Social Responsibility
    • The student who contributes positively to the learning community and to society is information literate and:
      • recognizes the importance of information to a democratic society
      • practices ethical behavior in regard to information and information technology
      • participates effectively in groups to pursue and generate information

The school library media program is not only integral to and supportive of the school curriculum, but also provides a mechanism for choice and exploration beyond the prescribed course of study. The school library media program provides a wide range of resources and information that satisfy the educational needs and interests of students. The school library media center provides a setting where students develop skills they will need as adults to locate, analyze, evaluate, interpret, and communicate information and ideas in an information-rich world.

In addition to skills introduced and learned in previous grades, second grade students will:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of alphabetical order to the second letter, locating easy books and fiction by the author’s last name
  • Demonstrate knowledge that non-fiction books are grouped according to subject
  • Begin to explore the automated card catalog
  • Begin to use parts of a book or electronic materials to locate information (table of contents, index)
  • Begin to understand the importance and variety of reference materials
  • Be introduced to the encyclopedia in print and electronic format
  • Simple introduction to the internet
  • Begin to take notes from library sources
  • Continue to use technology programs for finding and recording information
  • Continue to pursue information related to personal interests
  • Introduced to and reads new as well as timeless literature
  • Continue to expand knowledge of important contributors to children’s literature
  • Continue to explore different types of literature
  • Maintain checked-out materials in good condition
