Second Grade Social Studies Content Standards

Second grade students are expected to:
-
Compare and contrast events that happened long ago and today
- Understand the concept of immigration
- Trace family history through the use of primary and secondary
sources
- Compare their daily lives with those of parents and
grandparents
- Create a timeline/storyboard depicting important events in
their lives

Utilize map skills to describe locations of people, places and
environments
- Use coordinates to locate places in their community (e.g. map
of classroom, school, town)
- Label a simple map of the North American continent (e.g.
countries, oceans, Great Lakes, major rivers, and mountain
ranges)
- Identify title, legends, directional indicators, scale and date
on a map
- Locate their ancestors place of origin on a map
- Compare and contrast California land use in urban, suburban,
and rural land area

Understand basic practices of government
- Understand the concept of laws, their effects and consequences
- Discuss the ways in which groups and nations interact and
resolve problems

Understand how our economic system works today and long ago
- Study how natural and human resources affect the supply and
production of food
- Discuss the interdependence of consumers, producers, processors
and distributors

Understand historys impact
- Explore how the experiences of extraordinary persons in history
have impacted their own and other peoples lives. (i.e.,
biographies of Abraham Lincoln, Louis Pasteur, Sitting Bull,
George Washington Carver, Marie Curie, Albert Einstein, Golda Meir, Jackie Robinson, and Sally Ride)
