Third Grade Library Media Content Standards

  • Information Literacy
    • The student who is information literate:
      • accesses information efficiently and effectively
      • evaluates information critically and competently
      • uses information accurately and creatively
  • Independent Learning
    • The student who is an independent learner is information literate and:
      • pursues information related to personal interests
      • appreciates literature and other creative expressions of information
      • strives for excellence in information seeking and knowledge generation
  • Social Responsibility
    • The student who contributes positively to the learning community and to society is information literate and:
      • recognizes the importance of information to a democratic society
      • practices ethical behavior in regard to information and information technology
      • participates effectively in groups to pursue and generate information

The school library media program is not only integral to and supportive of the school curriculum, but also provides a mechanism for choice and exploration beyond the prescribed course of study. The school library media program provides a wide range of resources and information that satisfy the educational needs and interests of students. The school library media center provides a setting where students develop skills they will need as adults to locate, analyze, evaluate, interpret, and communicate information and ideas in an information-rich world.

In addition to skills introduced and learned in previous grades, third grade students will:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of alphabetical order to the third letter, locating fiction by the author’s last name
  • Be introduced to the Dewey Decimal System and begin to locate non-fiction books by their call numbers, including biographies
  • Use the LMC catalog to locate materials by author, subject, title, keyword
  • Be introduced to specialized reference sources
  • Begin exploration of internet as an information source
  • Practice using indexes to find information
  • Continue to learn to take notes from information sources
  • Be introduced to bibliographies and correct recording of sources used
  • Be introduced to and read additional genres (i.e., historical fiction, folklore, poetry, adventure, biography)
  • Read books of merit and expand knowledge of award winning authors and illustrators including Newberry Award books
  • Continue to independently locate and select reading materials of personal interest 
  • Share experiences of literature through oral and listening activities
