Third Grade Literacy Content Standards

Third grade students are expected to:

  • Reading
    • Read age/grade level appropriate material fluently and develop expression
    • Take responsibility for reading in selection of independent and shared reading
    • Read and understand a wide variety of material (e.g. fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, legends, myths, instructions, fables)
      • use structure of book efficiently (e.g. titles, table of contents, chapter headings, glossaries, indexes)
      • use dictionary to learn about unknown words
    • Apply strategies while reading to learn new vocabulary
      • use phonetic cues (syllables, compound words, word families, recognize similarities in sounds of words)
      • use semantic cues
      • use contextual cues
      • picture cues
      • word meanings (e.g. use synonyms, antonyms, homophones)
      • root word, prefix, suffix
      • use grammatical (syntax) cues; verb tense
    • Demonstrate comprehension by responding to reading orally and in writing
      • identify main idea, problem and solution, theme, speaker, character analysis
      • ask questions, recall, retell and predict major points and support with evidence from text
      • identify structural patterns (e.g. cause and effect, fact and opinion, supporting details in expository text)
    • Begin to read beyond a literal level (make inferences, show awareness of humor, make a personal connection with a story)
  • Writing
    • Using an established rubric, understand and use the tools of the writing process
    • pre-writing – develop a story plan by generating and organizing ideas
    • drafting – compose a story that progresses logically from beginning to end; incorporating descriptive language and details
    • responding – share work with others for positive feedback and revision
    • revising – add or delete details to improve clarity based on feedback
    • editing – apply conventions of written English (e.g. spelling, punctuation, grammar, sentence structure)
    • Publishing – rewrite selected pieces for publication
    • Using concrete sensory detail, write for a variety of purposes and audiences, developing style and voice
      • narrative

      • personal and formal letters

    • Develop a paragraph using a topic sentence, supporting sentences and a conclusion
    • Use a variety of resources (e.g. encyclopedia, internet, card catalog, almanac, newspaper, periodicals)
    • Form letters correctly and legibly using cursive
    • Identify blends, contractions, compounds, consonant doubling, etc. to correctly spell high frequency words
  • Grammar, Punctuation and Capitalization

  •             Identify subjects and verbs that are in agreement and identify and use pronouns, adjectives, compound words, and articles correctly in writing and speaking
  •             Identify and use past, present, and future verb tenses properly in writing and speaking
  •             Identify and use subjects and verbs correctly in speaking and writing simple sentences
  •         Punctuation
  •             Punctuate dates, city and state, and titles of books correctly
  •             Use commas in dates, locations, and addresses and for items in a series
  •         Capitalization
  •             Capitalize geographical names, holidays, historical periods, and special events correctly
  • Listening and speaking
    • Listen, understand, plan and speak effectively and coherently in formal and informal situations, in small groups and individually (e.g. formal, narrative, descriptive presentations, spontaneous dialogue, dramatic interpretations, poetry)
    • Contribute relevant information to class discussions
    • Consider various points of view
    • Ask appropriate questions
    • Listen attentively and follow directions
    • Use clear audible speaking voice
    • Use eye contact, voice, body language and expression to engage the listener
    • Retell, paraphrase and explain what has been said by a speaker
    • Distinguish between fact and opinion
