Third Grade Social Studies Content Standards

Third grade students are expected to:

  • Continuity and change
    • Geography
      • Identify major landforms of Marin County. (e.g. Mt. Tamalpais, San Francisco Bay, peninsula, ocean, coast line, inlet, island)
      • Use maps, tables, graphs, photographs to organize information about people, and places
  • Coast Miwok Indian studies
    • Describe the life style and beliefs of the Coast Miwok Indians, including religion, folklore, government, economy
    • Describe how the Miwok used the resources in their environment (e.g. how they obtained food, clothing, shelter, tools)
    • Examine the impact of new settlers on the Miwoks
  • Mill Valley past and present
    • Organize the sequence of events in Mill Valley history
    • Drawing on historical documents and photographs, explain why Mill Valley was established and how the community has changed over time
    • Identify early and recent settlers of Mill Valley and their contributions to the city’s culture (including landmarks and community events)
    • Examine the past and present business practices of the city (e.g. lumber, tourism, current businesses)
    • Distinguish among products that are made locally, nationally and abroad
    • Examine changes in the use of natural resources in and around Mill Valley (e.g. land use, water supply) and their impact on the environment
    • Understand how people make choices by weighing costs and benefits
  • Basic U.S. Government and citizenship
    • Relate the need for classroom agreements to laws, the U.S. Constitution and consequences for violating rules and laws
    • Promote the importance of citizenship both in school and civic life
    • Understand the ideals behind national symbols and landmarks (e.g. the U.S. Flag, the bald eagle, the Statue of Liberty, the U.S. Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Capitol)
    • Recognize the contributions of American heroes (e.g. biographies of Anne Hutchinson, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Fredrick Douglas, Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, Jr.)
    • Understand how Marin County is composed of cities in the same way the United States is composed of 50 states, including sovereign American Indian tribes.  All have a voice in a unified government.
    • Understand the public participation process of Mill Valley and Marin County governments (e.g. courts, city council, City Hall and county departments)
