Information Literacy

The student who is information literate:
- accesses information efficiently and effectively
- evaluates information critically and competently
- uses information accurately and creatively

Independent Learning

The student who is an independent learner is information literate
and:
- pursues information related to personal interests
- appreciates literature and other creative expressions of information
- strives for excellence in information seeking and knowledge
generation

The student who contributes positively to the learning community and to society is
information literate and:
- recognizes the importance of information to a democratic society
- practices ethical behavior in regard to information and information technology
- participates effectively in groups to pursue and generate information
The school library media program is not only integral to and
supportive of the school curriculum, but also provides a
mechanism for choice and exploration beyond the prescribed course
of study. The school library media program provides a wide range
of resources and information that satisfy the educational needs
and interests of students. The school library media center
provides a setting where students develop skills they will need
as adults to locate, analyze, evaluate, interpret, and
communicate information and ideas in an information-rich world.
In addition to skills introduced and learned in previous grades,
fourth grade students will:
- Independently locate materials in all section of the LMC
- Use the LMC catalog to find materials in all sections of the
LMCexpand knowledge of keyword searching
- Become familiar with more specialized reference materials
including almanacs, specialized CD Roms, online periodical
databases
- Build on note-taking strategies (for example, skimming,
extracting)
- With support, select appropriate reference materials for a
given task
- Differentiate between relevant and nonrelevant information
- Begin to organize information in order to effectively present
it
- Become more familiar with search strategies using the internet
- Use information in a responsible manner
- Continue to develop use of bibliographies
- Continue exploring wide variety of genres
- Explore various types of literature to expand understanding of
curricular content areas
- Continue to compare and contrast work of selected authors and
illustrators
