Fourth Grade Music Content Standards

Effective music instruction incorporates:

  • Artistic Perception:
    • Students listen to and analyze music critically, using the vocabulary and language of music. Students read and notate music.
  • Creative Expression Component:
    • Students sing or perform on instruments a varied repertoire of music. Students improvise melodies, variations, and accompaniments.
  • Historical and Cultural Context:
    • Students develop knowledge and skills necessary to understand and perform music from all parts of the world by identifying a variety of instruments and songs from various cultures. They develop knowledge and understanding of the relationship of music to history and culture.
  • Aesthetic Valuing Component:
    • Students apply knowledge, skills, and understandings to make critical judgments about, and determine the quality of music experiences and performances.

The student-centered program provides opportunities to explore a variety of music experiences.

  • The music program:
    • Is developmentally appropriate, from kindergarten through eighth grade
    • Provides practical and theoretical experiences for reflection and analysis of music
    • Provides skill development and mastery throughout the creative process
    • Develops lifelong learners with a commitment to the arts

Fourth grade students are expected to:

  • Identify changes in tempi, melodic patterns, specific musical forms, complex and layered rhythms
  • Perform, read and write simple pitch patterns, musical forms and simple rhythms
  • Sing and or play at any tempo
  • Play diatonic melodies, specific musical forms, complex rhythmic patterns
  • Create diatonic melodic patterns, musical compositions, multimedia projects
  • Compose original music using non-traditional sources
  • Identify, sing and or play various ethnic music and musical instruments and examples
  • Employ self assessment of individual and ensemble experiences
  • Display an ability to discuss and debate differing opinions about music examples
