Information Literacy
The student who is information literate:
accesses information efficiently and effectively
evaluates information critically and competently
uses information accurately and creatively

Independent Learning
The student who is an independent learner is information literate
and:
pursues information related to personal interests
appreciates literature and other creative expressions of information
strives for excellence in information seeking and knowledge
generation

Social Responsibility

The student who contributes positively to the learning community and to society is
information literate and:
- recognizes the importance of information to a democratic society
- practices ethical behavior in regard to information and information technology
- participates effectively in groups to pursue and generate information
The school library media program is not only integral to and
supportive of the school curriculum, but also provides a
mechanism for choice and exploration beyond the prescribed course
of study. The school library media program provides a wide range
of resources and information that satisfy the educational needs
and interests of students. The school library media center
provides a setting where students develop skills they will need
as adults to locate, analyze, evaluate, interpret, and
communicate information and ideas in an information-rich world.
In addition to skills introduced and learned in previous grades,
fifth grade students will:
- Continue to evaluate and synthesize gathered information from
all types of reference sources
- Understand the importance of creating a search strategy and
formulate questions based on information needs
- Be introduced to the concept of Boolean searching to enhance
research process
- Evaluate the appropriateness of a resource and use a wide range
of information sources in research process
- Refine search strategies using the internet
- Continue to learn to organize information gathered in the
research process
- Continue to experience literature of high quality
- Develop the ability to become discriminating readers,
discussing and critiquing authors main ideas
