Sixth Grade Mathematics Content Standards
Students demonstrate conceptual understanding and computational
accuracy.
Students use problem solving approaches to investigate and
understand mathematical content.
Students communicate their understanding of mathematics by
reflecting on and clarifying their thinking about mathematical
ideas and situations.
SIXTH GRADE STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO:
-
Numbers and operations
- Read, write and compare integers, decimals, and fractions
- Explain and use the four basic operations with integers,
decimals, and fractions
- Round and estimate to determine correct answers by establishing
reasonable ranges
- Understand and apply the relationship between fractions,
decimal percents, and proportions
- Use whole numbers, decimals, and fractions to analyze data
- Identify prime and composite numbers and write composite
numbers as the products of primes
- Use exponents to write and evaluate expressions with whole
number exponents
-
Measurement and Geometry
- Identify and describe the properties of two-dimensional figures
using geometric terms
- Measure and calculate perimeter and area of common geometric
forms
-
Functions and Algebra
- Apply algebraic order of operations, and the commutative,
associative and distributive properties
- Simplify expressions and solve simple equations
- Solve problems involving rates and formulas
- Use variables to express geometric quantities
-
Statistics and Probability
- Demonstrate an understanding of central tendency (mean, median,
mode) in collecting, organizing, displaying and interpreting real
life data
- Determine theoretical and experimental probabilities to make
predictions about events
-
Problem solving and mathematical reasoning
- Solve extended problems using whole numbers, decimals, and
fractions, giving detailed explanations of the solutions that
include charts, graphs and/or diagrams
