Seventh Grade Foreign Language Content Standards

Students learn to effectively communicate in the foreign language on a variety of topics. The initial emphasis is on speaking and listening with follow-up development of reading and writing.

Students develop a knowledge of the culture, geography, and history of the countries where the foreign language is spoken.

Students reinforce their understanding of the language and culture through a “Cultural Participation and Research” project which is completed outside of class.

Students learn grammatical concepts to increase understanding of the structure and nature of language.

Students perform brief skits and work in small groups to gain ease in communication.

Using the foreign language, first year students are expected to:

  • Make plans to meet, express thanks, greet, introduce and say good-bye
  • Order food and read a menu
  • Ask about and tell the day of the week, date and time
  • Talk about the weather
  • Identify classroom objects and school supplies
  • Identify parts of the body
  • Describe rooms in a house and furnishings
  • Describe family members and their relationships
  • Identify places in a city and its public buildings
  • Discuss likes, dislikes, preferences and needs
  • Explain preferences in leisure-time activities, sports and music
  • Describe people, self and objects
  • Recognize numbers and count to 1,000
  • Name colors
  • Recognize and use classroom commands
  • Identify on a map the countries where the foreign language is spoken

First year foreign language students will display knowledge of the following grammatical concepts:

  • Present tense of the 3 verb conjugations
  • Present tense of basic irregular verbs (to be, to do, to go, to have)
  • Definite and indefinite articles and gender
  • Agreement of adjectives
  • Possessive adjectives
  • Formation of a question and use of interrogative words
