Seventh Grade Science Content Standards
Students become ecologically literate to understand the
interconnectedness of humans and the environment and to live and
act in ways which reflect this understanding.
Students develop knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas,
as well as an understanding of how scientists study the natural
world with increasingly higher levels of complexity.
Students use scientific strategies, knowledge and common sense to
formulate questions about, understand and explain a wide range of
phenomena.
Students seek knowledge and understanding by questioning,
observing, investigating, analyzing and evaluating.
Seventh grade students are expected to:
-
Life Science
-
All living organisms are composed of cells whose details usually
are visible only through a microscope
- Identify the characteristics that distinguish plant cells from
animal cells
- Learn the structure and function of cells
- Identify the differences between sexual and asexual
reproduction
- Learn that DNA is the genetic material of living organisms
which controls how traits are inherited
- Discuss how biological evolution accounts for the diversity of
species
- Explore how independent lines of evidence from geology,
fossils, and comparative anatomy provide a basis for the theory
of evolution
- Understand the organization of living systems from cells,
tissues, organs, systems, and organism
- Study skeletal, muscular, nervous, digestive, circulatory, and
reproductive systems
-
Family Life
- Compare male and female reproductive anatomy
- Learn the stages of pregnancy
-
Earth Science and Life History
-
Evidence from rocks allows us to understand the evolution of life
on Earth
- Explore the rock cycle, geologic layers, radioactive dating,
and environmental conditions of the Earth
- Understand how changes in climate and geology have affected the
past and present distribution of organisms
-
Physical Science
-
Physical principles which underlie biological structures and
functions
- Understand the physical properties of how light is perceived by
organisms and manipulated by scientific equipment
- Observe how light interacts with matter by refraction,
reflection, and absorption
- Discuss how the musculoskeletal system uses levers to provide a
mechanical advantage
-
Investigation and experimentation
-
Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and
conducting careful investigations
- Select and use appropriate tools and technology
- Report data using graphs, charts, and maps
- Write a lab report following the scientific method
