Seventh Grade Vocal Music Content Standards
Artistic perception: Students listen to and analyze music
critically, using vocabulary and language of music. Students read
and notate music.
Creative expression component: Students sing a varied repertoire
of music. Students improvise melodies, variations and
accompaniments.
Historical and cultural context: Students develop knowledge and
skills necessary to understand and perform music from all parts
of the world by identifying a variety of instruments and songs
from various cultures. They develop knowledge and understanding
of the relationship of music to history and culture.
Aesthetic valuing component: Students apply knowledge, skills,
and understanding to make critical judgments about, and determine
the quality of music experiences and performances.
The music program:
- Is developmentally appropriate from kindergarten through eighth
grade
- Provides practical and theoretical experiences for reflection
and analysis of music
- Provides skill development and mastery throughout the creative
process
- Develops lifelong learners with a commitment to the arts
Seventh grade students are expected to:
- Demonstrate their understanding of music notation that
expresses rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics and form
- Perform multi-part repertoire from various genres and cultures
- Analyze and make appropriate adjustments in ensemble
cohesiveness and blending
- Create vocal and rhythmic ostinati to accompany primary vocal
lines
- Employ self-assessment of individual and ensemble experiences
- Connect with other middle school curriculum
- Discuss the historical, cultural and musical content of various
musical selections
- Sing various styles of music using healthy vocal techniques
