Kindergarten Library Media Content Standards

  • Information Literacy
    • The student who is information literate:
      • accesses information efficiently and effectively
      • evaluates information critically and competently
      • uses information accurately and creatively
  • Independent Learning
    • The student who is an independent learner is information literate and:
      • pursues information related to personal interests.
      • appreciates literature and other creative expressions of information
      • strives for excellence in information seeking and knowledge generation
  • Social Responsibility
    • The student who contributes positively to the learning community and to society is information literate and:
      • recognizes the importance of information to a democratic society
      • practices ethical behavior in regard to information and information technology
      • participates effectively in groups to pursue and generate information

The school library media program is not only integral to and supportive of the school curriculum, but also provides a mechanism for choice and exploration beyond the prescribed course of study. The school library media program provides a wide range of resources and information that satisfy the educational needs and interests of students. The school library media center provides a setting where students develop skills they will need as adults to locate, analyze, evaluate, interpret, and communicate information and ideas in an information-rich world.

Kindergarten students are expected to:

  • Be introduced to the Library Media Center (LMC) collection and layout
  • Become familiar with parts of the book (author, illustrator, cover, title page)
  • Learn to appreciate literature through listening, observing, responding
  • Experience high quality literature and begin to identify simple types of literature
  • Begin to develop interests in specific authors and illustrators
  • Begin to choose appropriate books for personal enjoyment
  • Begin to understand the difference between fiction and non-fiction
  • Be introduced to the routine of check-out and check-in of materials
  • Learn to respect LMC staff and materials and follow library procedures
  • Demonstrate consideration of others while in the LMC
  • Begin to recognize parts of the computer
  • Learn initial computer use vocabulary
  • Begin to use simple computer programs
