Kindergarten Mathematics Content Standards

  • Kindergarten students are expected to:
    • Arithmetic and number
      • Count to 30
      • Understand concept and vocabulary of before, after, more, less, same, next, between
      • Count objects to 20 and match with numerals
      • Count by multiples ( e.g. 10’s)
      • Sequence numerals to 10
      • Write numerals to 30
      • Recognize when an estimate is reasonable
      • Group, label and compare sets up to 10
      • Use objects to understand the concept of addition and subtraction
      • Subitising (the instantaneous recognition of number sets without counting e.g. dice, dominos) to 6
    • Geometry
      • Identify shapes and their characteristics
    • Sorting and classifying
      • Sort and label groups of objects and/or pictures by their attribute
    • Measurement
      • Use non-standard units of measurement (height, length, weight) to identify characteristics of an object
      • Demonstrate understanding of concepts of time and tools that measure time (morning, afternoon, evening, day, week, year, clock, calendar)
      • Name the days of the week
      • Identify time to the nearest hour of everyday events (lunchtime is 12:00)
    • Patterns, Functions and Algebra
      • Recognize, extend and create patterns
      • Translate patterns into other forms using letters and movements (e.g. sing, clap ABAB)
      • Recognize patterns occurring in the world around us
      • Explore symmetry
    • Graphing
      • Participate in the construction of concrete and pictorial graphs
      • Make simple inferences about real life data
    • Problem solving and mathematical reasoning
      • Explore and experience a variety of strategies and materials
      • Record and explain findings
    • Mathematical communication
      • Use appropriate mathematical vocabulary
      • Show ideas using a variety of concrete materials
      • Understand and follow oral directions
