Kindergarten Science Content Standards

  • Kindergarten students are expected to:
    • Physical Science
      • Describe objects in terms of the materials they are made of (e.g. clay, cloth, paper) and their physical properties (color, size, shape, weight, texture, floating, sinking, attraction to magnets, flexibility)
      • Observe materials and objects and learn that matter has distinctive properties by which it can be described
      • Explore that materials, such as water, can exist in different states — solid, liquid, gas
    • Earth Science
      • Explore that the Earth is composed of land, air and water
      • Observe changes in weather occurring day to day and over seasons, affecting the Earth and its inhabitants
      • Know characteristics of mountains, rivers, oceans, valleys, deserts, and local landforms
      • Learn that materials from the Earth provide many of the resources that humans use (e.g. reduce, reuse, recycle)
    • Life Science
      • Learn different types of plants and animals that inhabit the Earth
      • Observe and describe similarities and differences in the appearance and the behavior of plants and animals (e.g. seed-bearing plant, birds, fish, insects)
      • Identify major structures of plants and animals (e.g., stems, leaves, root, arms, wings, legs)
      • Discuss safety and health issues (e.g., fire, earthquake, healthy snacks)
    • Investigating and experimentation
      • Use five senses to observe and get information
      • Describe the properties of common objects
      • Describe the relative position of objects using a reference (e.g., above or below)
      • Compare and sort common objects based on one physical attribute (including color, shape, texture, size, weight)
      • Communicate observations orally and in drawings
      • Students know that stories sometime give plants and animals attributes they do not really have
