Physical Education Standards Kindergarten through 2nd Grade

KINDERGARTEN THROUGH SECOND GRADE STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO :

Use a variety of basic and advanced movement forms

  • Use a variety of basic locomotor movements (e.g. running, skipping, hopping)
  • Use a variety of non-locomotor skills (e.g. bending, twisting, stretching)
  • Use a variety of basic object control skills (e.g. throw, catch, hand dribble, foot dribble)
  • Use simple combinations of fundamental movement skills (e.g. locomotor, non-locomotor)
  • Use control in weight bearing activities
  • Use control in balance activities
  • Use control in travel activities (e.g. travels in backward direction and changes direction quickly and safely)
  • Use smooth transitions between sequential motor skills (e.g. running into a jump)
  • Use locomotor skills in rhythmical patterns
  • Use movement concepts and principles in the development of motor skills
  • Understand a vocabulary of basic movement concepts (e.g. personal space, speeds, balance)
  • Understand the critical elements of a variety of basic movement patterns
  • Use feedback to improve performance
  • Understand the importance of practice in learning skills
  • Understand how to monitor and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness
  • Engage in basic activities that cause cardiorespiratory exertion
  • Know the physiological indicators that accompany moderate to vigorous physical activity
  • Engage in activities that develop muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility
  • Understand how body composition influences physical fitness levels
