Physical Education Standards Kindergarten through 2nd Grade
KINDERGARTEN THROUGH SECOND GRADE STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO :
Use a variety of basic and advanced movement forms
- Use a variety of basic locomotor movements (e.g. running, skipping, hopping)
- Use a variety of non-locomotor skills (e.g. bending, twisting, stretching)
- Use a variety of basic object control skills (e.g. throw, catch, hand dribble, foot dribble)
- Use simple combinations of fundamental movement skills (e.g. locomotor, non-locomotor)
- Use control in weight bearing activities
- Use control in balance activities
- Use control in travel activities (e.g. travels in backward direction and changes direction quickly and safely)
- Use smooth transitions between sequential motor skills (e.g. running into a jump)
- Use locomotor skills in rhythmical patterns
- Use movement concepts and principles in the development of motor skills
- Understand a vocabulary of basic movement concepts (e.g. personal space, speeds, balance)
- Understand the critical elements of a variety of basic movement patterns
- Use feedback to improve performance
- Understand the importance of practice in learning skills
- Understand how to monitor and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness
- Engage in basic activities that cause cardiorespiratory exertion
- Know the physiological indicators that accompany moderate to vigorous physical activity
- Engage in activities that develop muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility
- Understand how body composition influences physical fitness levels
