What Are Educational Specifications?

Educational Specifications or "Ed Specs" serve as the link between the educational programs of our District and the specific school facilities. These specifications translate the physical requirements of an educational program into words, allowing architectural concepts and solutions to support the stated educational programs. The Educational Specifications serve as a “blueprint” for future facilities planning, containing concepts that are visionary and idealistic.

 

How Were They Created?

In coordination with our Educational Specification Team from Vanir Construction that consisted of Judith Wallace, Stan Ng and Jean Slater we conducted 30 School Site Ed Spec Committee meetings, 2 Cabinet meetings, 3 Administrative Council meetings, 2 Facilities Master Plan Committees, several School staff meetings, and over 20 additional review and coordination meetings with Vanir to collect and sort data.

All the schools and district departments completed worksheets for optimal types of spaces needed to deliver education in the Mill Valley School District .  Initially each school had a committee to gather and present this information.  Some schools held workshops with entire teaching staff, others had one on one session with departments, and others reached out to grade level leaders.  These individual approaches to data gathering were encouraged to expand our reach and were extremely successful.

This information was condensed by Vanir and then brought back to the sites for more action. Eventually the Facilities Master Plan Committee, which is made up of at least one member of each of the Site Level Ed Spec Committees, was asked to review and comment on the District level Ed Specs. The final review of content was completed by the Administrative Council.
