"Liquid Nitrogen is usd to store food, so when you eat it you'll be in a good mood."

Introduction

Nitrogen comes from two greek words. Nitron whic means saltpeter and genes wich means producing. All living organims are made up of compounds including Nitrogen, Oxygen, Hydrogen, and Carbon. Each of thses comes from the air and water around us. Each molocule of Nitrogen is made up of two Nitrogen atoms linked together extremly strongly. energy is needed to convert Nitrogen (N2) molocules in the air into Nitrogen containing compounds.

General

Nitrogen makes up about 79% of the air we breath. When it is removed from the air it is readted with hydrogen to make ammonia for fertilizers. It is colorless, odorless, almost inert diatomic gas. N2, in varius minerals and in all proteins. It was discovered by Daniel Rutherford in Scotland. Sweden in 1772. The the three most important gases of Nitroge are Nitrgen Dioxide( Brown gas that is the cause of the brown part of modern smog) and Nitrous and Nitric Oxides( both colorless gases). All three gases are from vehicles and contribute in varius ways to acid rain.

Model

A nitrogen molecule; the three lines joining the two atoms represent a three bond, which shows that it has a high " bond energy".

Uses

Items that must be frozen n very low temp. for preservation are usually stored in liquid nitrogen. Fertility clinics also store eggs, sperms, and embyos in it. Documents, foods, and chemicalare sometimes stored in nitrogen to keep them from reacting with air.

Glossary

  • Nitron- saltpeter
  • Genes- prducing
  • saltpeter- A compound called potassium nitrate, well known as fertilizer.
  • acid rain- rain that is contaminated by acid gases such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides relesed by polution.
  • nonmetel- elements that are dull(not shiny) and that are poor conductorsof thermal and electric current.
  • smog- a mixture of smoke an fog. The term is used to describe city fogs in which there is a large proportoin of particulate matter and also high concentrations of sulfur and nitrogen gaes and probably ozone.
