Lanthanum

by Alex

"If you want a camera that they use in Holly Wood make sure it has Lanthanum in it and then you're all good."

Uses

Lanthanum is used in expensive camera lenses. This is because it gives glass, light bending properties. It is also used in lighter flints.

History

Lanthanum was discovered by Carl Mosander. It comes from the Greek word lanthaneis ( to lie hidden.) It is obtained from monazite bastnasite. It is soft to cut with a knife and is one of the most reactive of the rare earth metals. it oxidizes completely when exposed to air.It reacts directly with elemental carbon, nitrogen, boron, selenium, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur, and with halogens. It has a low-moderate toxcicity rating.

 Glossary

oxidizes -- To increase the positive charge or valence of (an element) by removing electrons

atomic mass -- The mass of an atom

atomic number -- The number of electrons inside an atom

halogens -- Any of a group of five chemically related nonmetallic elements including fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and astatine.

toxcicity rating -- The level of how toxic an element is

Cost

Lanthanum is extremely expensive. It cost 5 dollars a gram. This is because it is used in many expensive camera lenses to give them light bending properties.
