Hazards of Radon

Radon is very radioactive so there must be lots of care taken with it. The main thing is not to inhale this element and its solids that can collect on dust in the air. You should have good ventilation where you have this element. Many deaths are caused by radon exposure when you have lung cancer. If the air in homes becomes 4 pCi/i medical action will take place.

History/Background

Radon was discovered in 1898 by Fredrich Ernst Dorn in Germany. Its name originated from radium. it is formed from the decay of radium in the earth's crust. In 1908 radon was renamed to niton, but than it was changed back to radon in 1923 and has stayed that ever sense. It was found to be the heaviest know gas.

Uses

Radon is used to treat some forms of cancer. radon decays into radioactive polonium and alpha rays, this radiation makes radon useful in cancer therapy. gold needles are pumped up with radium gasses and are implanted into the diseased tissue. it is also used in earthquake prediction. Some of the houses that are built on granite have health threats with radon and radon detectors should be used on the bottom floor of the house.

This is a picture of a radon cancer cell. Cancer is sometimes treated with radon.

Glossary

Alpha rays: Rays of relatively low penetrating power emitted by radium and other radioactive substances, and shown to consist of positively charged particles (perhaps particles of helium) having enormous velocities but small masses. They are slightly deflected by a strong magnetic or electric field.

Fusion: A nuclear reaction in which nuclei combine to form more massive nuclei with the simulanteous release of energy.

Ventilation: To admit fresh air into (a mine, for example) to replace stale or noxious air.

Radioactive: Of, exhibiting, or caused by radioactivity.

Atomic mass: The mass of an atom, usually expressed in atomic mass units.

Atomic number: The number of protons in an atomic nucleus.

Crystal Structure: The configuration in which atoms are arranged in a material. These arrangements have a direct effect on the physical properties of the material. These arrangements commonly take the form of cubes, rectangular solids, hexagonal solids. Etc.
