History

In 1801 Del Rio, a Mexican scientist first discovered Vanadium. However, a French scientist claimed that he only discovered un-pure Chromium. Del Rio accepted this answer. Nothing new happened until 1830 when Seftrom rediscovered Vanadium and named it after the Scandinavian Goddess Vanadis. However, not until 1867 was Vanadium made completely pure.

Uses

The main reason Vanadium is used for is to strengthen metals. Vanadium increases other metals by a tremendous degree. It strengthens everything from garage tools like monkey wrenches to springs and even to jet engines. It is used when a really hard metal is needed. It is also commonly used in chemical plumbing supplies. Also, vanadium is used in high powered magnets and as a catalyst in chemistry.

Glossary
  • Catalyst- A substance, usually used in small amounts relative to the reactants that modifies and increases the rate of an action without being consumed in the process.
  • Chromium-A lustrous, hard, steel-gray metallic element, resistant to tarnish and corrosion and found primarily in chromate.
  • Titanium-A strong, low-density, highly corrosion-resistant, lustrous white metallic element that occurs widely in igneous rocks and is used to alloy aircraft metals for low weight, strength, and high-temperature stability
  • Neutrons-An electrically neutral subatomic particle in the baryon family, having a mass 1,839 times that of the electron, stable when bound in an atomic nucleus,
  • Electrons-an elementary particle with negative charge
  • Protons-A stable, positively charged subatomic particle in the baryon family having a mass 1,836 times that of the electron
