Superintendent's Message

Season's Greetings,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and our entire professional staff,
I want to wish all of you the very best this holiday season.  All of us are very grateful for your continued support of all children in Mill Valley.  As the staff prepares for a well-deserved winter break, there is much we can be proud of here.  The support of our educational partners and our general community will never be taken for granted.  The specific fund raising our PTAs and Kiddo! did to help lessen a funding gap will help us provide the quality of education for the remainder of the 2008-09 school year you all expect.   Everything from the bone marrow registration drive to Middle School Holiday Baskets demonstrates the spirit of giving in our learning community; and provides the example for our children to give back to others.  A fierce dedication to and support for a 'comprehensive' education that demonstrates to our children that rigorous academics and an appreciation for the arts must compliment each other.  Setting the example of collaboration both within our staff and through District committees provides the example that a good school, school district, or community can be great when people know and practice the act of involvement.  Even in these difficult economic times, our staff and families know that one of the best ways to guarantee a strong future is to give our children the kind of education they deserve so they can make our future even stronger.  All of these examples are about the act of giving. So, this holiday season, no matter how you celebrate, pause for a moment.  Look into the eyes of your son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, niece or nephew and tell them how important they are.  Then in the new year, re-commit to not only telling them, but showing them with your own example.  This is the most important gift we will ever give our children.

The very best to all of you and may you have a happy new year,

Ken Benny

Board Meeting Highlights

At the November School Board Meeting:

  • The Board recognized the volunteer efforts of our community on Measure A.  Recognized were Tammy Edmonson, chair of the Measure A campaign and all those who served tirelessly leading the successful campaign.
  • The Board heard a student learning report on the math textbook adoption process.  California requires school districts use state-allocated funds for textbook adoptions in very specific ways and for specifically identified instructional texts.
  • The Community Financial Advisory Commission (CFAC) presented its updated five year forecasting model and a follow-up to last spring's report on Clean Renewable Energy Bonds.
  • Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Michele Rollins presented the annual budget development calendar. The Board of Trustees will adopt the operating budget for the 2009-2010 school year in June of 2009.  Its annual finance study session will be held in March 2009.
  • The Board received collective bargaining re-openers from the California School Employees Association (CSEA). CSEA is the bargaining unit that represents classified employees in the District.
  • Director of Maintenance and Operations Tim Ryan presented for the Board's formal acceptance the completed Education Specifications, which serve as the link between the educational program of the school district and the specific physical school facilities.  The Education Specifications acts as a 'blueprint' for future facilities planning.
At the December 10th School Board meeting
  • Principal Matt Huxley presented a progress update on adoption of math materials at Mill Valley Middle School.
  • Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Michele Rollins presented the required Budget Revision and 2008-09 First Interim Financial Reports.  The First Interim Report provides an overview of the District's financial standing as of October 31, 2008 and provides an adjusted three-year financial projection.  This report is a required component of California educational finance.
  • Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Michele Rollins presented MVSD Re-Openers for 2008-09 negotiations with California School Employees Association (CSEA).
  • Director of Maintenance and Operations Tim Ryan provided an update on the Long-term Facilities Master Plan, including revised timeline, next steps and fiscal approval for additional work related to the completion of the master plan.  The Facilities Master Plan serves as our District's strategic plan for the future of our facilities.
Kindergarten Registration Starts Early This Year

All Schools Recognized As High Performing
Just For the Kids Logo

Once again, Mill Valley Schools have been recognized as California high performing school districts.  In each of its first four years of recognition, the California Business for Educational Excellence Foundation (CBEE) and Just for the Kids California(JFTK-CA) recognized several MVSD schools.  For the first time, all six have been honored as California Honor Roll Schools in 2008.  This recognition comes to our schools for their continued focus on and improvement of student achievement over time.  Along with Mill Valley, California schools are showing improvement in advancing student achievement.  In 2006, the CBEE and JFTK-CA recognized 304 high performing schools throughout the state.  This year that number has increased to 911.  Even though the State of California's per pupil funding for its public schools is 46th in the nation, those schools are showing improvement in student achievement.  Congratulations to our learning community in Mill Valley, which continues to support high levels of student learning.
State Budget News - Please Stay Tuned, Educated and Informed

As this calendar year finishes up, we find ourselves in the same situation we were in when the school year closed in June.  At that time, we had no state budget and no assurance of educational funding for the new school and fiscal year.  At this juncture in time, our state lawmakers can't agree on a strategy to address the fiscal crisis in California and all of us, educators included are left wondering what will happen in the new calendar year.  It is extremely important as citizens and education supporters to pay close attention to what is happening in Sacramento.  There are possibilities of mid-year cuts to education and other vital services.  The extent at this point remains uncertain.  It is critical that you communicate with your representatives to let them know what is most important.  I hope you will agree that education is one of those very important services that can't be compromised.  Our educational representatives in Sacramento are very clear with us in the education community that education won't be spared, but we have to be very clear with legislators that the educational system in California is already underfunded and that any sacrifices made in this area will further compromise our children's future.

We will do our very best to make certain our learning community is provided the very latest and best information by way of our Board, Staff, and
Financial Commission (CFAC).
