Superintendent's Message

To Our Learning Community:

Our entire instructional staff just completed the 2nd consecutive County-wide Staff Development Day on January 26.  This event took place at seven schools throughout Marin County and brought together 2000 educators.  These kinds of large scale staff development events are not intended to be an end in themselves, but rather to serve as a catalyst for more local work.

Which brings me to the point of thanking our community for supporting the on-going learning of our professionals, who not only attend these kinds of events, but also spend countless hours on their own investment in learning that benefits the learning of kids.  Parents know that their kids are dismissed an hour early each Wednesday so teachers can work in teams at their schools, becoming the learners themselves.  They work within and across schools. When we hire new teachers to our District, I tell them at our New Teacher Institute that in Mill Valley collaboration is a non-negotiable. Said another way, "Collaboration is expected by all."  We are educating our kids for a diverse work world that stretches across cultures and the globe.  It not only requires individual academic skills, but also skills related to working collaboratively within a diverse workforce.  Our modeling of collaboration 'focused on the work' is critical.

By a very simple approximation, our teachers feed kids' minds over 1,000 hours spanning 180 days.  They feed their own minds about 80 hours over the course of 186 days.  To be sure, they spend many more hours of their own getting better at the skill and art of teaching.  The act of teaching well in the 21st century requires a sophisticated skill set that I have to frankly admit I didn't need 'back in the day'.

I make a point of spending time in schools nearly every Wednesday to observe adult learning.  I am never disappointed with the content of the learning and the attitude of the learner.  We are all grateful for the learning opportunities; and personally I am grateful I work with educators in Mill Valley.

Sincerely,

Ken Benny

Enrollment Update
Frequently, we have shared our enrollment growth in Mill Valley.  Kindergarten registration is underway and to date we have registered 213 prospective Kindergarten students for the 2009-2010 school year.  This compares to 157 this time last year.  Our overall enrollment is 2,498 over our nine grade levels.  This is an increase of 88 from last year.  Total enrollment demonstrates continued growth moving through the District grade levels and will be a significant consideration as we continue to plan the use of our budget and facilities.

Week of the School Administrator
The first week of March is designated as the week of the School Administrator in California.  Our District Principals and Administrators are a group of dedicated professionals who serve staff, students, parents and community in a wide variety of ways.  They are one of the reasons Mill Valley School District continues to be a high performing and attractive school district for recruiting staff and welcoming new families.  We are grateful for their dedication!
Traffic Congestion and School Safety
Parents and staff alike have commented that traffic congestion in general and some 'less than careful' attention to pedestrians in our school zones remains an issue that needs your attention.  Please remember that when dropping off or picking up students to observe all parking restrictions and to be extra careful when driving through areas where pedestrians young and old will be present.  At the Middle School, especially remember that the drop off and pick up of students should occur in the designated Middle School pick up and drop off lanes.   Please use the main lot for visitor business only by using the designated spaces and observing the time limits.

Please obey all posted signage and painted curbs to avoid a penalty or fine. All California vehicle codes that apply to neighboring streets apply to drivers when on public school campuses.

Remember children will not always do what we say, but will do what we do.  Help us model appropriate behavior by complying with all posted signs and speed limits on and around school district property.
Avoid Traffic by Using SchoolPool
SchoolPool logo One way to avoid traffic congestion at all school sites is to sign up for the SchoolPool program sponsered by Safe Routes To Schools. SchoolPool connects you with other Mill Valley parents in your neighborhood who would also like to carpool.  Page 13 of your 2008-09 MVSD Directory explains how SchoolPool works. You can also visit the Safe Routes website for more information including neighborhood maps and contact information for team leaders at each school.

Thank you for using carpooling, walking and biking alternatives when transporting children to school. Your choice contributes to the health and safety of your children as well as our community and the environment.
