Reading and writing is
the core of our language arts curriculum. The reading program uses a
variety of children's literature and instructional methods to develop
conceptual understanding, critical thinking and independent reading
strategies. Teachers use a balanced approach that includes a variety of
instructional strategies including: phonics, read aloud, guided
reading, oral reading , listening centers, student responses to
literature, oral, silent, and partnered reading, building on students'
personal knowledge and one-to-one assistance to promote reading
comprehension and skill improvement. Children are also assigned reading
time for homework. If a student is perceived to be having difficulty, a
variety of strategies are applied, including but not limited to,
special sessions with the Reading and Math (RAMP) Specialist. Students' skills in writing evolve with the
"Process Writing" approach. They prepare drafts, revise, edit, and then
publish their works. Various types of writing including essays,
fiction, non-fiction, poetry, expository and descriptive are explored. The following K-5th
grade language arts links are aligned with district and state standards. If you have any links to add, please email
us as we will be
updating this section often.
