• Our Programs
We offer a continuum of programs and services in the Mill Valley School District

    • In our 5 Elementary Schools we have 6.6 special education teachers who work collaboratively with all of the staff.  Every student with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) in the district school program is placed in a general education classroom and then according to his or her IEP services- push in or pull out  services are offered.
    • Mill Valley was the first District in Marin to offer a Learning Center Program which was developed at Tam Valley School and is also offered at Strawberry Point School.  Our learning center provides a variety of programs and students work on their individual goals with the learning center team individually or in small groups depending on their IEP.
    • At our Middle School we have 6 full time special education teachers offering a variety of specialized academic services to help students navigate the middle school environment.  As the population at the Middle School grows which is now over 1000 students so has the special education department.  We offer specialized academic instruction for core subjects as well as specialized academic support.  We have included students from other districts who want to participate in our program.
    • In 2013 Mill Valley decided to operate an Early Intervention program which is based at Park School to assess students between the ages of 3-5 who may have learning differences or specialized needs.  The early intervention students are welcomed on the Park campus and are offered opportunities to have buddies from the elementary classes, having 5th grade students put on special programs, help with transitioning to K by being included in the kindergarten program, and participating in specials at the school.
    • We work in partnership with the Marin County Office of Education (MCOE), which operates specialized programs for students with more significant needs, and offer a variety of programs to all students in Marin County. We house two of their classes in our District.  A class at the Middle School and one at Edna Maguire.
    • Mill Valley has a parent run special education PTA called “It Takes a Village (ITAV)” which raises monies for our special education programs and puts on a speakers series monthly open to the public regarding topics of interest to all parents. This group has paid for teachers to attend professional development programs such as Making Math Real, and Zones of Regulations They also schedule monthly “coffees” at various parents’ houses to discuss special education questions and needs in an informal setting.
    • The special education program at Mill Valley has benefited from the generosity of the PTAs based at each school, individual parents in the community, and money from Dedication to Special Education (DSE) to purchase specialized materials, technology and attend professional development.
    • As an inclusive District our special education teachers have participated in the district-wide trainings that happen over the summer and during the school year such as the Columbia Writing/Reading Program with all of the teachers and the newly adopted math program ”Everyday Math” so that they can adapt the curriculum for all of our students.
    • All of our staff use technology in their classes so that students can participate in the curriculum at their schools and access specialized programs.
    • All of our schools have special education teachers, psychologists, speech and OT services available.
