    Park School Second Grade 2018-2019

Welcome to Second Grade. Our goal is to create a classroom that is warm, safe, and a nurturing environment where friendship, cooperation, and responsibility grow along with the development of academic, social, and physical skills. Each child shares the responsibility for achieving this goal. Independence is a big part of your child’s second grade journey. We work hard to help the children see themselves as independent, responsible, capable students. Our role is as a guide and facilitator for eachchild’s academic and social progress.

Communication: The home/school link is an important part of our 2nd grade program. We value and appreciate your support. On a regular basis, a newsletter will be emailed and/or sent home with announcements, news, and curriculum information. It will also be posted on my teacher website. If ever you have any questions or concerns please email me at sstrike@mvschools.org. If you have not been receiving emails to date, please send us an email, with“class list” in the subject line, so we can add you to our contactlist. Let’s work together to make your child’s second grade year ahappy and successful one.

Conferences: Parent conferences will be held November 5th-16th. (Please remember there will be early dismissal at 1:45pm on all conference days.) A notice will come home (close to conference time) for you to sign up for a date and time. We encourage both parents to attend the same conference.

Homework: Book bags with homework and a just right book will be sent home on Monday to be returned Friday. We will assign homework weekly and it should take approximately 25 minutes a day including reading. Some nights may just be reading.

The homework will support and emphasize curriculum skills and strategies we’ve worked on in class. It will also provide opportunities for you to engage with your child around the subjects we are studying. If there is a problem with the homework, or if your child is just having a really “off” night, please have your child write a note and we will finish together in class.

Reading can take different forms including partner reading, silent reading, reading to your child or having your child read to you. Extra reading is always encouraged as appropriate. The only way to become a better reader is to read! Reading builds comprehension skills, vocabulary, spelling expertise, as well as the understanding about authors and their craft.

Classroom Conduct: We have high expectations for behavior in and out of the classroom. We spend time discussing and defining behavior expectations at school and how we want our classroom to be. When necessary, we have a class meeting to work out playground issues, social conflicts, and anything else that comes up in school. Our school/classroom rules are: Be Safe, Be Kind, Be Respectful, Listen and Follow Directions.

Second Grade Field Trips: Our field trips include: A visit to the Marin Art and Garden Center in April, The Academy Of Science on March 13th, and an end-of-the year trip to Rodeo Beach. There is a fee for a few trips. We’ll ask for a donation from parents. I need a parent volunteer to collect this money, as well as write the checks. As teachers, we are not allowed to handle these funds.

Please let me know if you are willing to do this job.

It’s going to be a great year. We look forward to getting to know all of you.
