We would like to take this opportunity to inform you about our expectations regarding your child’s homework. As a second grade team, we feel that daily reading is vital. Therefore, reading 20-30 minutes per night is the most important, daily, routine. Reading can take different forms. You might try: silent reading, partner reading, reading to your child or having your child read to you. All of these activities, if done on a daily basis, build stamina, comprehension and fluency skills.
As the children learn reading comprehension strategies such as visualization or retelling, we will sometimes send homework to reinforce these concepts. Math games and computation practice will also be a regular part of the homework program.
We strive for our homework to be relevant and meaningful. It will sometimes also provide family interaction when assignments include playing math games or doing an interview for social studies. We believe that in second grade, homework should be short and sweet and that reading becomes a pleasure - if it isn’t already.
We will review the homework assignments with the children, in class, at the beginning of each week. Please let us know if your child has any trouble.
HOMEWORK WILL BEGIN THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 17th.
