Dear Fourth Grade Families,
Welcome to fourth grade! I hope your summer has been relaxing and that you are getting ready to start another school year. Back-to-school is one of my favorite times of year, and I hope you are as eager to start the new year as I am. Fourth grade is going to be very busy and exciting, filled with a great curriculum that will keep us all active and learning from August to June. We will focus particularly on writing, building reading comprehension, studying California, and extending math concepts, as well as developing critical and creative thought.
This is my eighth year of teaching and my sixth year in fourth grade at Edna Maguire. After earning my undergraduate degree in Mathematics at the University of Puget Sound, I attended Northwestern University for graduate school in education. I then taught fifth grade for two years just outside of Chicago. My husband and I moved to Marin in 2008, and I am thrilled to be returning to fourth grade at Edna Maguire this year. I continue to be impressed with the parents, students, and learning community here, and I cannot wait to work cooperatively for a successful year.
We will start the year building a classroom community, valuing each child and ensuring that each child feels at home. The community will be made up of unique individuals, each with his or her own learning style, interests, and hopes for school. Would you help me begin to learn about your child by taking a few moments to fill out the attached survey? Your answers will give me information from the people who know your child best – you! This will help me to better address the needs of each student in the classroom and to be a partner with you in educating your child. Please return this survey to the classroom with your child the first week of school.
To help our program run smoothly, I recommend that your child have the supplies listed on the enclosed “Recommended Supply List.” Please be sure your child brings his or her supplies to the classroom during the first week of school.
Because fourth grade is a year of significant growth academically and socially, we will spend time at the beginning of the year setting specific expectations for students at school. In my opinion, the best way to encourage student involvement is to help kids love learning! I would love your support with this task by promoting learning at home. I hope to see you at Back-to-School Night on September 11th where we can further discuss fourth grade curriculum, class procedures, and expectations for this year. Please know that I am always available via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
I look forward to meeting all of you!
Message to Fourth-Graders:
Does it feel strange to be called fourth-graders? In a short time you will start a new school year in fourth grade. Get excited! I hope you have been enjoying your summers and relaxing…and hopefully reading and keeping your brains active, too. J
I am excited to be your teacher this year. We have lots to look forward to in fourth grade. Our classroom will be filled with learning that may even be challenging at times, but we will definitely fill our year with fun, too.
You still have a few more days left in summer vacation, but I have a homework assignment for the first day of school – I promise it’s easy! On the first day of school, please bring one item to share with the class that represents you. The item should fit in your backpack and you should be able to leave the item in the classroom for a few days. We will share these items as a class to learn more about each other. I bet you won’t guess what my item is!
See you on the first day of school!
