Important Enrollment Information

Priority Registration

Priority Registration for the 2027–2028 school year opens on December 14, 2026, and closes on January 29, 2027.

All families currently residing within the Mill Valley School District boundaries are strongly encouraged to complete enrollment during this priority registration window.

Please keep the following in mind:

  • Register during the priority window: Families who enroll by January 29, 2027, will receive school placement consideration before families who register after the priority window closes.
  • Late registration: Families who enroll after January 29, 2027, will receive their school placements after families who registered during the priority window.
  • Kindergarten–5th Grade Registration: Parents/guardians must rank all five elementary schools in order of preference (1st through 5th) for their child's registration to be considered complete.

Waitlist Requests

After initial school assignments have been made, families may request to place their child on a waitlist for a different school.

Please note the following requirements:

  • Accept the initial placement: Families must first accept their child's assigned school before requesting placement on another school's waitlist.
  • One waitlist per student: Students may be placed on the waitlist for only one additional school.
  • Waitlist duration: The waitlist will remain active through the 10th day of the new school year.
  • Waitlist consideration: Waitlist movement will be evaluated using the same criteria applied during the initial school placement process.

Intradistrict Transfers

Families who wish to transfer their child from their currently assigned school to another school within the Mill Valley School District may submit an intradistrict transfer request for the upcoming school year.

The intradistrict transfer request window for the 2027–2028 school year is December 14, 2026, through January 29, 2027.

How MVSD School Placement Works

Mill Valley Elementary School Placement

Mill Valley does not have neighborhood-based school assignments. This means that placement at the elementary school closest to your home cannot be guaranteed.

When assigning students to schools, the District considers several factors. While distance from home is one consideration, we make every effort to give appropriate consideration to families who live closer to a particular school.

School placements are determined based on the following factors:

  • Facility capacity: Available space and maintaining balanced class sizes across the District.
  • District program needs: Including Special Education, English Learner Newcomer programs, and other specialized services.
  • Sibling priority: Siblings of currently enrolled students.
  • Children of District employees: In accordance with Interdistrict Board Policy.
  • Proximity to school: Distance from the student's residence to the requested school, determined using uniform mapping software.

School Preference Requests

For placement consideration, parents/guardians are asked to rank all five elementary schools in order of preference (1st through 5th).

Please note that requests that do not include a ranked preference for each of the five elementary schools may be discarded.
