• Evidence may be a combination of paraphrasing and direct quotations.

     

    Paraphrasing is when you put what happens into your own words.

      

    Setting-up quotations:

    —use the setting (like where in the story it is happening)

    —or,  “For example when…”

     

    When explaining how the evidence support a claim:

    — this shows that
    —this confirms
    —this demonstrates
    —this describes
    —this explains
    —this illustrates

    —it is clear that

    —this suggests

    —this implies

    —this reveals

     

    Add commentary after explanation:

    Commentary is why what you explained is important. It answers the question, “So what?”
